Korais Dance Group

Beginnings

The origin of the group was in 1980 with a talented and strong-willed dancer/instructor, Katina Klidas, who was only 12 years old at the time.

With the support of her parents, Evangelia and John Klidas, Katina started with a group of 5 children ranging from 7 to 12 years in age.

Within two years, as momentum began to build, the group began performing at our annual dance, quickly becoming the pride of our Society and the community.

Growth

Under Katina’s leadership, the Dance Group grew in size with multiple age groups ranging from kindergarten through high school. Their profile grew and were requested to perform at outside events.

One early highlight was in 1986 when the group was invited to perform at the Ethnic Festival for the Centennial Celebration of the Statue of Liberty.

Future

Over 500 children have participated in the dance group all gaining memories that last a lifetime,

Many of them are now adults who have brought their own children to participate. We are now looking forward to seeing a third generation of dancers!

Beyond learning the art of the dance, participation has so many benefits for children who gain friendships, love of their heritage, confidence in themselves and interpersonal skills.

We are happy to announce that on Friday evening, January 6, 2023 we will be restarting our program with Thea Nitis returning as our instructor!

We will be continuing with our elementary school through high school aged groups as we have in the past and add a session for young adults, college age and beyond. This is a great opportunity for those who:

  • Are new to dance and want to learn

  • Want to practice or improve their skills

  • Want to socialize and make new friends

Sessions we be held at the Panchiaki Korais Building, 43-15 202nd Street, Bayside, NY 11361

  • Session 1: 7:00pm to 8:00pm for Elementary School Age through High School

  • Session 2: 8:00pm to 9:00pm for Young Adults College Age and beyond
