2021 Commemoration of the Liberation of Chios
On Sunday, November 14th, 2021, the Panchiaki “Korais” Society and the Chian Federation commemorated the 109th Anniversary of the Liberation of Chios at Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Corona, New York.
We celebrated the divine liturgy followed by a memorial service and doxology. After church we hosted a reception with lunch and brief program in the church hall.
It took 91 years following the start of the Greek War for Independence for our island to finally achieve its own liberation in 1912. Every year we commemorate the anniversary of November 11 as a constant reminder of how precious freedom is because there is a danger lurking not more than 8 miles off our coast that threatens to take it away.
We thank Fr. Chrysostom, the Parish Council and Ladies Philoptochos of the Transfiguration of Christ community for hosting us. It was truly heartwarming to visit the church so soon after its re-opening following the fire that left it severely damaged in 2017.
Our societies and many of our members have a a long history with this community and we are happy to see it endure through challenges under strong leadership.
