200 Year Anniversary / Commemoration of the Massacre of Chios of 1822 - June 11, 2022

Panchiaki Korais Society co-hosted the event with the Chian Federation and Chios Societies of America and Canada. A memorial service was held at Saint Demetrios in Astoria followed by a luncheon and presentation at the Chian Cultural Center in Astoria.

The event was well attended and included many young adults who had an opportunity to learn important details about their island’s history.

Peter Gerazounis, President of the Panchiaki Korais Society offered a presentation beginning with background leading up to 1822 including detailed and dramatic depictions of what unfolded in the months of March through June of that year, where three quarters of the island’s population was either slaughtered or enslaved, finishing with the outcome bringing us through present day.
