The Korais Library
Adamantios Korais was a Greek scholar of Chian descent credited with laying the foundations of modern Greek literature and a major figure in the Greek Enlightenment during the period preceding and after the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire.
His activities were instrumental in assisting the Greeks to wage their War of Independence that commenced in 1821. Considered a hero of the Revolution, Korais “fought with his pen” to write publications and correspond to leaders throughout Europe and the world including Thomas Jefferson.
The Korais Library is Chios’ central public library. A historic institution whose history goes back to 1792, it is one of the oldest and largest libraries in Greece.
The Panchiaki "Korais" Society of New York was proud to coordinate a presentation on August 3, 2023, hosted by The Historic Central Public Library of Chios "Korais", Director Anna Chaziri, and Angeliki Mastromichalaki that entertained and educated everyone on the life and works of Korais, the Library and the Argenti Museum.
We welcome everyone who visits Chios to spend some time in the library to learn about the history and culture of Chios and Adamantios Korais….. It isn’t just books.
